Meet our Governors

Martin Preston – Chair of Governors
Now retired, I was previously a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool. During my career I was at various times a visiting professor/faculty member at the Universities of Bologna, Queensland and the World Maritime University in Sweden. I have also acted as a consultant to UNESCO, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, SAREC ( a Swedish Overseas Aid Agency) and the British Council. I have also worked for a variety of international government departments mostly in Kuwait and Dubai.
For over 20 years during my time in Liverpool I was a Governor at a CofE Girls High School. Since moving to the northeast during Covid lockdown I became associated with Duke’s firstly as a member of the Academy Improvement Board and more recently as Chair of the newly reconstituted Local Governing Board.
My goals as Chair of Governors at Duke’s are to help the school fulfil its undoubted potential to improve outcomes for all students, to encourage excellence, ambition and self-belief and to help the school follow the strategic direction and ethos of the NCEA Trust.

Helen Freeman – Parent Governor
I have worked in education since 2002 where I progressed into middle and then senior leadership by 2009. I have been involved in areas of attendance, behaviour and safeguarding. Recently, I have been heavily involved in mental health as the Senior Mental Health Lead at Dukes.Â
I currently have a child at Dukes Secondary school and I have a daughter who has Down syndrome so that gives me an insight into the world of SEND.
Ashington and the surrounding area has played a huge role in my life. I was educated in Ashington and now live locally with my family.Â
I want all young people to be able to develop and nurture aspirations no matter their ability.
Northumberland is beautiful and I am proud to live here. I spend a lot of my spare time visiting the local coastline and countryside with my family and going on the paddleboard whenever I can.

Su Fletcher – Staff Governor
I have been a teacher at Dukes since 2013 and I am very pleased to have become a staff governor. I am currently head of the science faculty within dukes and extremely passionate about the school, the area and teaching.
I strongly empathise with the every child matters agenda and firmly believe that every child has the ability to succeed given the right circumstances. I believe we have a strong culture within the North East of hard work and dedication and I am proud to be part of the culture within school willing to inspire this culture within the next generation so that they have the confidence to succeed, whatever and wherever they choose.
I have not always worked as a teacher but became inspired after my first visit as an adult to a classroom where I believe I found my niche in life. There is nothing more rewarding and exciting than working with children and I am keen to develop that passion through my role as a Governor and teacher at Dukes Secondary School.

Sam Lochead – Governor
I am the Priest-in-Charge of the Parish of Seaton Hirst, which includes Duke’s secondary school. Prior to becoming a priest, I taught Geography in a secondary school with an Anglican and Roman Catholic foundation.
This experience has deepened my understanding of how theology can shape and inspire education, as well as the vital role education plays in young people’s lives. My work as a governor reflects my broader commitment to the community of Seaton Hirst and to supporting everyone who lives, works, and studies here.

Sharon Cole – Governor
Following a short and uninspiring career with the civil service, I retrained as a teacher when my daughter was still
very young (she’s 26 now) and have been working in education ever since.
I started working as an English teacher in a large secondary school in Newcastle and spent a very happy 11 years there, working as part of a senior leadership team which saw the school move to a brand new build, heralding an era of change for the school. After 6 years as Assistant Headteacher and with a secure ‘Good’ from Ofsted, I was ready for a new challenge and took on a role in the Trust as a Deputy Headteacher in a Primary school.
I am now Co-Headteacher at Grace Darling C of E Primary School in Newbiggin by the Sea. My experience and working knowledge of both the primary and secondary sectors gives me a useful insight into how both phases should work together to deliver an outstanding all-through
